Fringe Reviews: The Best of The Comedians (Vol 2)

Jason Byrne: Wrecked But Ready **** (Assembly Hall), until August 25, 9:00pm
Ed Byrne: If I’m Honest **** (Assembly Rooms, George Street, Music Hall) ,until August 25,  9.00pm
The Fannys **** (The Stand 2), until August 25, 6:20pm
Craig Hill: Bottoms Up **** (Pleasance at EICC), until August 25, 7:20pm

Two masters of stand-up from Ireland, and two of the biggest names on the Fringe. Not surprisingly they are both packing them in every night.

Jason’s hyperactive approach is the flipside of Ed’s more measured approach, but both are excellent.

Jason has to be one of the most energetic comedians you’ll see on a stage - the sweat was pouring from him throughout this show in front of another full house.

He is at his very best interacting with his audience, and has a knack of finding the right people every night to mine some comedy gold.

His show is about life after separation from his wife, but he jumbles it altogether in an hour of non-stop laughter.

Ed reflects on what qualities he has to pass on to his two young boys and concludes there aren’t really that many. He still delivers a great hour of stand-up from it, though.

Byrne is engaging and pulls all the strands together in a smart finale - and a theme of parenthood will always chime with any audience.

The Fannys - JoJo Sutherland and Susan Morrison - can be found in a small upstairs room just off Queen Street, and they are an absolute hoot.

An hour filled with gales of laughter as they got almost everyone in their audience involved in their word association games and stories.

They are stalwarts of the Scottish comedy scene, and, together, have an absolute blast in this fabulous hour-long show. It's gloriously sweary and rude. More importantly, it's very, very funny...

Craig Hill is on top form, as always, at the EICC where he turns a giant conference room - the venue is as dull as it sounds - into a comedy club which rocks with laughter.

Latecomers are never missed, and he goes ‘was beyond the front row looking for folk to chat to and find comedy gold - and he discovers it every single night.

It doesn't matter how often you see him on stage, Craig Hill remains refreshing and gloriously funny every single night. A Fringe without seeing him simply isn’t allowed ...
